What does AEO mean?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: preparing website content to answer user questions clearly and make information easier for search engines and AI assistants to understand and reference. It applies to guides, comparisons, services, and products, not just e-commerce.
For a merchant, start with what a buyer needs to decide: the product, intended use, specifications, and purchase conditions. Clear information helps people assess the offer. It does not guarantee that an assistant will recommend it.
How are SEO, AEO, and GEO different?
The terms overlap. Crawlability, indexing, and useful content remain foundational. Google describes optimization for its generative search experiences as part of SEO.
| Term | Focus | Product-page example |
|---|---|---|
| SEO: Search Engine Optimization | Helping search engines discover, understand, and surface relevant pages. | Descriptive titles, useful copy, canonical URLs, and internal links. |
| AEO: Answer Engine Optimization | Making information directly useful for answering a question. | Stating capacity, material, and use instead of only saying “high quality”. |
| GEO: Generative Engine Optimization | Making reliable information useful as a source in generated answers. | Verifiable specifications and consistent policies with clear sources. |
A worked product-description example
This is a fictional teaching example, not a customer result. Suppose the merchant has verified a backpack’s 20-litre capacity, polyester material, and pocket for a laptop up to 15 inches. Do not add waterproofing or a warranty without evidence.
Replace “a premium bag for everyone” with “a 20-litre polyester backpack with a pocket for a laptop up to 15 inches”. For the question “Will my laptop fit?”, give the supported size and advise buyers to check actual device and pocket dimensions.
The improvement is specific, usable information. This example does not demonstrate a ranking or sales increase.
How can a merchant apply AEO?
Choose one important product page and inspect it as a visitor. Prioritize missing information that affects a purchase decision.
- Check Google access and indexing with URL Inspection in Search Console.
- Use a clear name and explain intended use near the beginning.
- Make specifications, variants, price, and availability visible and accurate.
- Answer real buyer questions and link relevant shipping and return policies.
- Check that available Product structured data agrees with visible information.
- Record the change date and compare equivalent periods, countries, and devices.
How should you measure results?
Use Search Console to track impressions, clicks, and queries for each page. Separate branded searches from other searches. Average position depends on the query, country, and device; a handful of impressions cannot establish a stable improvement.
Use store analytics for visits, add-to-cart actions, and orders. When recording an AI citation, keep the prompt, date, platform, and cited URL. A single answer does not measure your visibility across an entire assistant.
An audit readiness score evaluates page criteria. It is not a Google ranking or a guaranteed probability of an AI recommendation.
What does AEO Boost check?
AEO Boost audits one public product page and provides a readiness score, prioritized gaps, and recommendations for content, specifications, FAQs, trust, and structured data. Verify suggested facts before applying changes in your store.
The audit does not automatically edit products or guarantee indexing, rankings, citations, or sales. Use it to prioritize improvements, then measure actual outcomes separately.
Quick questions
What is AEO in simple terms?
Answer Engine Optimization means preparing clear, reliable website content that can help answer user questions. It applies to guides, services, and products.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Crawlability, indexing, useful content, and clear links remain foundational. AEO emphasizes answering questions within that foundation.
Are FAQs or schema enough?
No. Answers must be useful and accurate, and structured data must match the visible page. Neither guarantees visibility.
Does AEO guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No. The platform selects sources and products in the context of each question. Clearer content is not a guarantee of recommendations or sales.
Where should a Salla merchant start?
Review one important product’s title, specifications, description, buyer questions, and policies. Use an audit to prioritize gaps, then apply suitable changes manually.
